Recently I was tree stump grinding at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. It was a large garden that had several tree stumps of various types to be removed. The garden was having a complete makeover and being replanted with new shrubs and trees.
The access gate into the property in Bury St Edmunds was quite narrow; fortunately, with my Predator-tracked radio remote stump grinder, I was able to enter through the gate. The passageway was also narrow, with not a lot of room on each side of the stump grinder. However, the stump grinder narrows down to 26 inches, which is 66 cm. Although, I often tell customers 28 inches, just to allow a bit more leeway for various obstacles. The good news is that the stump grinder will go through a standard garden gate.
The types of tree stump that were removed were ranging from a large Holly tree stump that was about 3 feet in diameter. Holly is quite a hardwood to grind; however, there was some rot in the centre of the tree stump. The landscaper had tried to remove the tree stump with a mini digger. However, despite being all around the stump, it still would not move. So, I came in and removed the tree stump.
There were also other types of tree stumps, ranging from conifers to cherry tree stumps. Cherry tree wood is another hardwood tree, which is slightly slower to grind, however, normally, cherry tree stumps are not huge in diameter. So they do not take too long to grind out.
Stump grinding is the cleanest and easiest way to remove a tree stump in a garden and, indeed, anywhere else! Allegedly, the stump grinder can go down 18 inches below ground. But realistically, probably 12 inches is a more realistic depth. However, this is more than adequate for most jobs. Occasionally, if there are footings going in for building work, I will go deeper and make sure that the stump is removed totally.
